Scenic Creation Workshop
Led by: Mani Soleymanlou
16:00 a 19:30 PM
L’acteur créateur – l’interprète au centre de son texte
The Creative Actor – The Performer at the Center of Their Text
In this workshop, we will work with participating artists on scenic writing and autofictional writing. The performer will become the author of their own text—the very text they must interpret. The raw material: their identity. Together, we will question identity, what defines us—are we what has been passed down to us, or what we will pass on in turn?
We will ask ourselves: what does it mean to be someone today, to come from somewhere, to speak a language? How do we define ourselves—or are we only defined through the eyes of others?
We will explore and navigate this deeply personal material, walking the fine line between citizen and artist, performer and character. How do we distinguish one from the other? Where do we draw the line between fiction and reality? Is what is said on stage necessarily true, or does the stage—the theater—automatically transform reality into fiction? Into theatrical reality?

Workshop on Physical Acting

Led by: Adam Lazarus
10:00 a 14:00 PM
Intensive Bouffon Workshop with Award-Winning Artist Adam Lazarus from Toronto
Dive into a world of physical precision, razor-sharp mockery, and the satirical realm of bouffon.
This workshop is designed for professional and pre-professional actors, dancers, writers, critical thinkers, and physical performers seeking to expand their expressive range. Inspired by the legacy of French masters Philippe Gaulier and Jacques Lecoq—pioneers of physical theatre—this course challenges participants to take risks, sharpen their improvisational skills, and break through performance inhibitions.
The goal is to help actors rediscover the pleasure of being fully present and the sheer joy of mocking solemnity. Through bouffon, we critically examine the individuals and institutions that hold power and shape societal norms.
Bouffons travel in gangs, emerging from swamps and ghettos to confront the dominant world, poke at it, and expose hypocrisy in all its forms. The study of bouffon ideally leads to playfulness, hilarity, and incendiary critique. It is through the performer’s delight in moving, singing, crying, and dancing that the audience is drawn in and the performer’s beauty is revealed.
Games and exercises will be used to help participants discover the joy of play and the art of mocking social conventions—while seducing the audience in the process.
Bouffon creation techniques are incredibly useful for performers across disciplines, especially those with a sharp sense of humor. Adam Lazarus is an award-winning actor, director, and performance instructor. He teaches regularly at Canada’s National Theatre School, the University of Toronto, and the renowned Pig Iron Theatre School in Philadelphia. He apprenticed with Philippe Gaulier, with whom he also studied.
